General Description
|
|
Abstract:
|
This site (http://ghg.unfccc.int) contains summary tables and an on-line database of emission estimates for three main gases: CO2, CH4, N2O, as well as for CO, NOX, NMVOCs, and SO2. These data are in general available for 1990 - 1997. The emission estimates are presented in accordance with the source categories of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (1996).
This site contains only the most recently submitted information. In some cases, the most recent information for a period of years (e.g. 1990-1997) is based on different submissions, as information submitted from year to year does not necessarily include data for years previously submitted. Thus the data may not necessarily be consistent or comparable among years for a given Party.
Global Warming Potentials
The Global Warming Potentials used for presentation of CH4 and N2O in terms of CO2 equivalent are 21 and 310, respectively, for a 100 year time horizon (source: Climate Change 1995: The Science of Climate Change, table 4, p. 22, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 1996).
Emission source categories
Emission estimates are presented in accordance with the source categories of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (1996), with the exception of emissions from burning of biomass. As some information has been reported following previous IPCC reporting formats, emissions estimates from burning of biomass from gases other than CO2 are also provided where reported separately from other source categories.
It should also be noted that the category "National Total" does not include emissions resulting from fuel sold to ships or aircraft engaged in international transport (international bunker fuel emissions). Furthermore, in the case of CO2 , the "National Total" does not include emissions from biomass burning or emissions or removals from the land-use change and forestry sector.
|
|
Purpose:
|
In accordance with Articles 4 and 12 of the Convention, and the relevant decisions of the Conference of the Parties, Parties to the Convention submit national greenhouse gas inventories to the Climate Change secretariat. These inventory data are provided in the national communications under the Convention by Annex I and non-Annex I Parties. In addition, Annex I Parties submit annual national greenhouse gas inventories.

Data source. The data is based on the national greenhouse gas inventories given by the parties of the Climate Change Convention. This data is annually submitted to the Climate Change secretariat by national communications under the Convention by the Annex I Parties.
Annex I Parties - The industrialized countries listed in this annex to the Climate Change Convention tried to return their greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2000. They have also accepted emission targets for the period 2008-12. They include the following members Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America and 14 countries with economies in transition: Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) - The major GHGs responsible for causing climate change are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N20). The Kyoto Protocol also addresses hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).
For more detailed information about the GHG inventory database see: http://ghg.unfccc.int/.
1 Gigagram corresponds to 1 Thousand Metric Tons.
