General Description
Abstract:
Data cover the production by aquaculture of finfish, crustaceans, molluscs, and aquatic plants. Time series are reported for the following species groups by country of production, by environment of production (brackish, inland fresh, and marine waters), and for the world: carps, barbels, and other cyprinids; tilapias and other cichlids; miscellaneous freshwater finfishes; sturgeons and paddlefish; river eels; sea-spiders and crabs; lobsters and spiny-rock lobsters; shrimp and prawns; miscellaneous marine crustaceans; freshwater molluscs; abalones, winkles, and conchs; oysters; mussels; scallops and pectins; clams, cockles, and arkshells; red seaweeds; green seaweeds and other algae; and miscellaneous aquatic plants. Data are also reported for each country of production by species group. The value of aquaculture production is reported in U.S. dollars by continent and by country. Aquaculture data are collected by FAO using the FISHSTAT AQ inquiry form. Data from the inquiry are supplemented by information from published literature, academic reviews, and consultants' reports.
Purpose:
Collection of aquaculture data by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) began in 1984 and is now a regular feature of the FAO annual statistical survey of world fishery activities.

Definitions:
Aquaculture is defined by FAO as "the farming of aquatic organisms". Farming implies some form of intervention in the rearing process to enhance production, such as regular stocking, feeding, protection from predators, etc. Farming also implies individual or corporate ownership of the stock being cultivated. For statistical purposes, aquatic organisms which are harvested by an individual or corporate body which has owned them throughout their rearing period contribute to aquaculture while aquatic organisms which are exploitable by the public as a common property resource, with or without appropriate licenses, are the harvest of fisheries. Production of fish, crustaceans and molluscs is expressed in live weight, that is the nominal weight of the aquatic organisms at the time of capture. The harvest of aquatic plants is given in wet weight. Fish, crustaceans, molluscs and all other aquatic organisms included in the database have been classified according to approximately 350 commercial species items, further arranged within the 50 groups of species constituting the nine divisions of the FAO International Standard Statistical Classification of Aquatic Animals and Plants (ISSCAAP). The taxonomic code descriptors are taken from FAO's Aquatic Science and Fisheries Information System.
Comments:
Aquaculture total production includes all fish, molluscs, crustaceans, aquatic plants, aquatic animals and animal products, cultivated in freshwater, marine and brackish environments. All data reported as "0.5" values are according to the provider considered as greater than zero, but less than 0.5 metric tons.
