General Description
Abstract:
The World Mangrove Atlas is the first significant attempt to provide an overview of the distribution of mangroves worldwide. Mapped data showing the extent of mangroves in over 100 countries have been gathered from a wide range of sources. These have been synthesised into a series of twenty-five regional maps. Related texts describe the status, species, areal extent and other summary information on the mangroves in each country. A number of full-colour maps and case studies illustrate in more detail a range of mangrove ecosystems around the world. These include remotely sensed imagery and demonstrate what can be achieved using greater resolution and more detailed investigation. The World Mangrove Atlas is the final part of a trilogy produced by the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems and the International Tropical Timber Organization to promote awareness of the importance of mangroves. The other two parts of the trilogy are: Journey Amongst Mangroves and Restoration of Mangrove Ecosystems.
Purpose:
UNEP-WCMC maintains a large amount of information relating to marine and coastal environments and their conservation. Increasingly, this information is managed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Particular attention is devoted to mapping sensitive coastal ecosystems and this information is of interest to oil companies for oil spill emergency response and contingency planning.

Definitions:
Mangrove trees and shrubs, including ferns and palms, are found along river banks and coastlines in tropical and subtropical countries. Their main characteristic is that they can tolerate salt and brackish water environments. Globally, there are seventy known species of mangroves.
Comments:
The data for forest cover by forest type are for 1996 . The WCMC analysis was carried out by overlaying forest and protected areas coverages in a Geographic Information System. The forest GIS coverages were created at WCMC by compiling many national and regional data showing forest extent. Many of the map sources where forest, land cover and/or vegetation maps.
