Average yield of cereals includes cereals grown for feed and seed. Typically, the yield value is not recorded and is instead calculated by dividing production by the area harvested. For a complete definition, please refer to the web page maintained by FAOSTAT: http://www.fao.org/waicent/faostat/agricult/pr_ele-e.htm. Cereals comprise all cereals harvested for dry grain, exclusive of crops cut for hay or harvested green. Cereals are classified according to their genus. Examples of cereals include: wheat, rice, barley, maize, rye, oats, millet, sorghum, buckwheat, and quinoa. For a complete listing and description, please refer to the web page maintained by FAOSTAT: http://www.fao.org/waicent/faoinfo/Economic/faodef/FDEF01E.HTM#1.02. Further information on these data and the Food and Agriculture Organization can be obtained at: http://www.fao.org.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides annual statistics, on a world-wide basis, on all important aspects of crop and livestock production. Coverage is provided on land use, irrigation, human population, index numbers of agricultural production, major crops, livestock numbers, livestock products, food supply, and means of production for individual countries, continents, and the world.

Calculated pre 1991-1992 relative country share
Former Yugoslavia SFR:
Pre-1991 realtive shares of the 15 republics of the former USSR calculated based on the data available after 1991. The calculated values relate to the regional/subregional and global aggragations only.
Pre-1992 realtive shares of the Czech Republic and Slovakia of the former Czechoslowakia calculated based on the data available after 1992. The calculated values relate to the regional/subregional and globa aggragations only.
Pre-1991 realtive shares of the 5 republics of the former Yugoslavia SFR calculated based on the data available after 1991. The calculated values realte to the regional/subregional and global aggregations only.

Cereals are generally of the gramineous family and, in the FAO concept, refer to crops harvested for dry grain only. Crops harvested green for forage, silage or grazing are classified as fodder crops. Also excluded are industrial crops, e.g. broom sorghum (Crude organic materials nes) and sweet sorghum when grown for syrup (Sugar crop nes). For international trade classifications, fresh cereals (other than sweet corn), whether or not suitable for use as fresh vegetables, are classified as cerreals.
Cereals are identified according to their genus; this category includes: heat rice, paddy, barely, maize, pop corn, rye, oats, millet, sorghum, bickwheat, quinoa, fonio, triticale, canary seed, mixed grain and cereals nes.
Yield represents the harvested production per unit of the harvested area for crop products. In most of the cases yield data are not recorded but obtained by dividing the data stored under production element by those recorded under element: area harvested.
