General Description
Abstract:
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides annual statistics, on a world-wide basis, on all important aspects of crop and livestock production. Coverage is provided on land use, irrigation, human population, index numbers of agricultural production, major crops, livestock numbers, livestock products, food supply, and means of production for individual countries, continents, and the world. Agricultural production indices are reported for countries and country groups (continents, regions, subregions, etc., and the world). Separate index series are provided for total and per capita food production, agricultural production, crop production, livestock products, and cereals. Country level crop production data are given, where possible, for: cereals; wheat; rice; coarse grains; barley; maize; rye; oats; millet; sorghum; roots and tubers, total; potatoes; sweet potatoes; cassava; yams; taro; pulses, total; dry beans; dry broad beans; dry peas; chick-peas; lentils; soybeans; groundnuts in shell; castor beans; sunflower seed; rapeseed; sesame seed; linseed; safflower seed; seed cotton; cottonseed; olives; oil; coconuts; copra; tung oil; palm kernels; palm oil; hempseed; total production of vegetables, fruits and berries, and nuts; cabbages; artichokes; tomatoes; cauliflowers; pumpkins, squash and gourds; cucumbers and gherkins; eggplants; green chiles and peppers; dry onions; garlic; green beans; green peas; carrots; watermelons; cantaloupes and other melons; grapes; wine; raisins; dates; sugar cane; sugar beets; centrifugal sugar; noncentrifugal sugar; apples; pears; peaches and nectarines; plums; oranges; tangerines, mandarins, clementines and satsumas; lemons and limes; grapefruit and pomelos; citrus fruit n.e.s.; apricots; avocados; mangoes; pineapples; bananas; plantains; papayas; strawberries; raspberries; currants; almonds; pistachios; hazelnuts (filberts); cashew nuts; chestnuts; walnuts; coffee, green; cocoa beans; tea; hops; tobacco leaves; flax fiber and tow; hemp fiber and tow; jute and jute-like fibers; sisal; cotton (lint); fiber crops n.e.s.; and natural rubber. Livestock statistics for individual countries include, wherever possible and applicable, numbers of horses, mules, asses, cattle, buffaloes, camels, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, and turkey. Country level livestock products data include number of slaughterings, average dressed carcass weight, and production of meat from slaughtered animals (within country boundaries, regardless of origin) for production of beef and veal, buffalo meat, mutton and lamb, goat meat, pig meat, horse meat, poultry meat, and total meat. Livestock production figures are also given for production of beef and buffalo meat, mutton and goat meat, and pig meat from indigenous animals. They include the meat equivalent of exported live animals and exclude the meat equivalent of imported live animals. Other livestock products include: cow milk, whole and fresh (with detail on number of milking cows, milk yield, and milk production); buffalo milk; sheep milk; goat milk; cheese, butter and ghee, evaporated and condensed milk; dry whole cow milk; dry skim milk and buttermilk; dry whey; hen eggs; eggs, excluding hen eggs; honey; silk, raw and waste; wool, greasy; wool, scoured; cattle and buffalo hides, fresh; sheepskins, fresh; and goatskins, fresh. Food supply is reported by country, continent, and the world for vegetable products, livestock products, and total foodstuffs as per capita per day quantities of available calories, protein, and fat. Means of production are reported by country, continent, and the world as the number of tractors, harvesters/threshers, and milking machines in use. (Agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, fertilizer use by crop pesticides, and agricultural prices are reported in other publications.) Agricultural production statistics are maintained from 1961. The time reference for statistics on crop area and production is based on the calendar year in which the entire harvest or the bulk of it took place. Livestock numbers are grouped in 12-month periods ending 30 September for the years stated in the statistical tables. With a few exceptions, livestock product accounts are based on the calendar year. For tractors and other agricultural machinery, data refer to the number in use at the end of the year stated or during the first quarter of the following year. The FAO index numbers of agricultural production are based on calendar-year data.
Purpose:
Time series on land use, irrigation, and population are provided for countries, geographic regions, and the world. Land use data include total area, land area (which excludes inland water bodies), arable land, land under permanent crops, permanent meadows and pasture, forests and woodlands, and other land. Data on irrigation relate to areas purposely provided with water, including land irrigated by controlled flooding. Population data include present-in-area (de facto) population, agricultural population, and economically active population, both total and agricultural.

Definitions:
Arable Land: land under temporary crops (double-cropped areas are counted only once), temporary meadows for mowing or pasture, land under market and kitchen gardens and land temporarily fallow (less than five years). The abandoned land resulting from shifting cultivation is not included in this category. Data for "Arable land" are not meant to indicate the amount of land that is potentially cultivable. Permanent Crops: land cultivated with crops that occupy the land for long periods and need not be replanted after each harvest, such as cocoa, coffee and rubber; this category includes land under flowering shrubs, fruit trees, nut trees and vines, but excludes land under trees grown for wood or timber.
