General Description
Abstract:
Data on consumption of pesticides are collected and presented for major groups and sub-groups as follows: INSECTICIDES Chlorinated hydrocarbons Organo-phosphates Carbamates-insecticides Pyrethroids Botanical and biological products Others, not elsewhere classified HERBICIDES Phenoxy hormone products Triazines Amides Carbamates-herbicides Dinitroanilines Urea derivatives Sulfonyl ureas Bipiridils Uracil Others not elsewhere classified FUNGICIDES, BACTERICIDES AND SEED TREATMENTS Inorganics Dithiocarbamates Benzimidazoles Triazoles Diazoles Diazines Morpholines Others, not elsewhere classified RODENTICIDES Anti-coagulants Others, not elsewhere classified. Limitations of the database: A strict inter-country comparison on the basis of the database is not feasible because: The country coverage and time series are incomplete due to a high rate of non-response. Although countries have been requested to report data in terms of active ingredients, some countries may have reported in formulation weight (including diluents and adjuvants) without specific indication. Purpose:
The Statistics Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations started the collection of data on consumption of major individual pesticides products about three decades ago. However, the response to the related Pesticides Consumption Annual Questionnaire sent to all member countries was not very encouraging. Therefore, in 1986 in co-operation with the Commission of the European Union, a study was undertaken to find ways to improve the country coverage of the data. The present work of collecting data on groups of pesticides is a result of the recommendations of this study. Data collected earlier have been published in various issues of the Production Yearbook.

General comments
Country notes:
Algeria: data refer to sale of pesticide products. Eritrea: preliminary data. Tanzania: data reported are not the actual consumption, as some quantities were imported into the country without importation permits and therefore not recorded. Honduras: data may refer to formulated products and not active ingredients. Jamaica: data refer to total import since information on stocks and products is not available. Panama: data are expressed in commercial product and not active ingredients. Belgium: data refer to sale and not consumption. "herbicides" figures also include quantity of herbicides sold for non-agricultural use. Hungary: data refer to formulated products. Ireland: data referring to the herbicides products: "amides" and "dinitroanilines" are included in "other herbidices" in the years 1996 and 1997. Italy: data refer to distribution of products for use in the agricultural sector. Norway: data refer to sale of products to the agricultural sector. Slovenia: data refer to formulated product.
Definitions:
Pesticides Consumption corresponds to the quantities of pesticides used in (or sold to) the agricultural sector. Figures are generally expressed in terms of active ingredients data. Herbicides include: Phenoxy hormone products, triazines, amides, carbamates-herbicides, dinitroanilines, urea derivatives, Sulfonyl ureas, Bipiridils, Uracil and others not elsewhere classified.

The Statistics Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations started the collection of data on consumption of major individual pesticides products about three decades ago. However, the response to the related Pesticides Consumption Annual Questionnaire sent to all member countries was not very encouraging. The present work of collecting data on groups of pesticides is a result of the recommendations of this study. Data collected earlier have been published in various issues of the Production Yearbook. The present database refers to the quantity of pesticides used in or sold to the agricultural sector expressed in metric tons of active ingredients. Information on quantities applied to single crops is not available. A strict inter-country comparison on the basis of the database is not feasible because: - The country coverage and time series are incomplete due to a high rate of non-response. - Although countries have been requested to report data in terms of active ingredients, some countries may have reported in formulation weight (including diluents and adjuvants) without specific indication.
