General Description
Abstract:
The number of deaths under 12 months among chlidren born in a given year is divided by the number of births for that year. When vital registration data is not available demographers use indirect estimation methods based on number of children ever born and surviving (collected from mothers through surveys). There is often incomplete and poor data available from developing countries. Data available on the CD-ROM World Population Prospect: The 2000 Revision prepared by the Population division, Dpartement of Economic and Social affairs. http://www.un.org/esa/population/unpop.htm
Purpose:
The infant mortality rate measures the survival of children, which is a reflection of the social, economic and environmental influences that impinge on children's lives. It is, therefore, not only a measure of the quality of the health service (both preventive and curative), but more broadly of the environment into which children are born, and therefore a good overall indicator of the current state of development and the way it affects children.
