General Description
Abstract:
Direct foreign investment is the net inflow of capital to acquire a lasting management interest (10 percent or more of the voting stock) in a country other than that of the investor. It includes (as shown in the balance of payments) equity capital, reinvestment of earnings, other long-term capital, and short-term capital. Foreign direct investment is net inflows of investment to acquire a lasting management interest (10 percent or more of voting stock) in an enterprise operating in an economy other than that of the investor. It is the sum of equity capital, reinvestment of earnings, other long-term capital, and short-term capital as shown in the balance of payments. Data are in 1997 U.S. dollars. Data are from the World Development Indicators 2001 CD-ROM http://www.worldbank.org/data
Purpose:
Recording statistical data on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is a prerequisite for economic analysis and policy making. The need of comprehensive, comparable and up-to-date data is increasing as FDI has assumed a crucial role in the internationalisation of economic activities. FDI reflects the objective of obtaining a lasting interest by a resident entity in one economy ("direct investor") in an entitiy resident in an economy other than that of the investor ("direct investment enterprise"). The lasting interest implies the existence of a long term relationship between the direct investor and the entreprise and a significant degree of influence on the management of the enterprise. Direct investment involve both the intitial transaction between the two entities and all subsequent capital transactions between them and among affiliated enterprises, both incorporated and unincorporated.
