General Description
Abstract:
Total population (assessed through a census or inter-census updates) is divded by the total area of the country. Conceptually, population density alone is not fully representative of population pressures, as the environmental impact of a population also depends on the type and level of development, the type of habitat, and so on. Data available on the CD-ROM World Population Prospect: The 2000 Revision prepared by the Population division, Dpartement of Economic and Social affairs. http://www.un.org/esa/population/unpop.htm
Purpose:
Population density gives a measure of human settlement pressures on the environment.

Definitions:
Population density is midyear population divided by land area in square kilometers. Population is based on the de facto definition of population, which counts all residents regardless of legal status or citizenship--except for refugees not permanently settled in the country of asylum, who are generally considered part of the population of their country of origin. Land area is a country's total area, excluding area under inland water bodies, national claims to continental shelf, and exclusive economic zones. In most cases the definition of inland water bodies includes major rivers and lakes. Data source for Land Area: FAOSTAT (Data as of July 2001)
