General Description
Abstract:
Where adeqaute registration exists, the natural increase is calculated by subtracting annual deaths from annual births; this is complemented by data on net migration (entries minus departures from country). If registration is lacking, some or all of these elements must be estimated using past reports and extrapolations. The denominator is the mean population, i.e. half-sum of the population at beginning and the end of the year. Indicator limitations are related to the inaccuracies of population and net migration data. Data available on the CD-ROM World Population Prospect: The 2000 Revision prepared by the Population division, Dpartement of Economic and Social affairs. http://www.un.org/esa/population/unpop.htm
Purpose:
Population growth is one of the factors used to calculate the levels of natural resource consumption and waste generation and the implications to the environment. Therefore, this indicator is important for evaluating human pressures on the environment.
