General Description
Abstract:
The urban and rural population are counted in national population censuses, or estimated through ad hoc surveys. Between these operations, estimates are often updated through projections based on the respective growth rates previously observed for urban and rural populations. Each country sets its own defintion of an "urban agglomeration", there is therefore a wide range of definitions making data comparability difficult (often, the definition is based on a threshold number of inhabitants, which may vary from few hundred to more than 10000 inhabitants). Not all localities, in terms of their economic and social characteristics, fit in the categories urban and rural (categories of purely rural, semi-rural, semi-urban, purely urban would therefore be more appropriate). Data available on the CD-ROM World Urbanization Prospect: The 1999 Revision prepared by the Population division, Departement of Economic and Social affairs. http://www.un.org/esa/population/unpop.htm
Purpose:
This indicator gives an important picture (espacially through a temporal series) of how the country population shifts to the urban way of life and related economic set-up (declining share of agriculture, increasing share of industry and services). Urbanization may also cause changes that increase the human burden on the environment.

Comments:
The data is only aggregated if at least 75 % of the observations are available (i.e. % of population or % of Population or % of countries) on an annual basis. The value "-9999" corresponds to "No Data".

Comments:
Figures for 1960-1995 are estimates and those for years beyond 1995 are projections. The urban population data presented are consistent with the medium variant of the 1998 Revision of World Population Prospects, the official United Nations population estimates and projections at the national level. The urban population estimates are based on the varying national definitions of urban areas. Copyright c 2001 United Nations Environment Programme/DEWA/GRID-Geneva.
